A USPS Missing Mail Search asks USPS to look for an item. An insurance claim asks for payment for an eligible insured item. Starting a search does not file an insurance claim.
Before you act
Check the exact carrier, service, role, and date in the official order or tracking page. A support inquiry, carrier claim, and seller refund are separate paths.
Two separate requests
The search helps locate a delayed or missing mailpiece. USPS says a search request can start seven days after mailing. It needs details such as both addresses, mailing date, container type, and a description of contents.
An insured claim concerns coverage, proof of mailing and value, and the filing period for the exact service. A postage refund for an eligible guaranteed service is a third, separate process.
Which step comes first?
- Check USPS Tracking and confirm physical USPS acceptance.
- If eligible and the item has been missing seven days since mailing, submit a Missing Mail Search with identifying details.
- Check the exact service and proof of insurance before opening a separate claim. Keep both confirmation numbers.
- If you bought from a merchant, ask it about order relief even if a USPS search is still open.
Do not combine the clocks
| Procedure | Timing | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| USPS Missing Mail Search | 7–365 calendar day from date mailed | Domestic missing mail eligible for online search |
| USPS domestic insured mail lost package | 15–60 calendar day from date mailed | Eligible insured mail incl. applicable Priority Mail and Ground Advantage |
A filing window is not a finding of eligibility or a promise of payment. Calendar days, business days, and calendar months are different.
An insured item, international shipment, or Priority Mail Express postage refund can follow a different rule. Check the current USPS page for your actual mail class.
